Table 2 Sulfa susceptibility of the E. coli ∆folP deletion expressing WT or mutated Sul enzymes in the pABA interaction regiona

From: Molecular mechanism of plasmid-borne resistance to sulfonamide antibiotics

  1. aThe sulfa susceptibility of the WT E. coli BW25113 strain and the E. coli ΔfolP strain carrying the indicated plasmids expressing EcDHPS or Sul1, Sul2, Sul3 and Sul variants with the indicated amino acid substitutions or deletions is reported. Results for the WT E. coli BW25113 strain is provided for comparison purposes. Results for the plasmid-free and empty plasmid-carrying (pGDP2) E. coli folP deletion are provided to confirm the absence of thymidine in the MHII agar media. For all strains and drugs tested, a minimum of three biological replicates were performed using the agar dilution method and MHII agar.
  2. bSMX sulfamethoxazole, SDZ sulfadiazine, SOZ sulfisoxazole.
  3. cDHPS status of the indicated strains.
  4. dNG no growth, or G growth on MHII agar.
