a Random forest model performances for ppSH richness. b Contribution of climatic, spatial and vegetation variables to the explained variation by the complete random forest model for ppSH richness. Each tree was fitted based on a random sample of two-third of the observations (“in-bag”), and each tree split was based on a different random subset of one-third of the predictors, while the results were cross-validated against the remaining observations (“out-of-bag”), which is in line with standard protocols. The model performance was assessed based on model R2 with 999 permutations. Vegetation reflects gross primary production and plant diversity. Source data are provided as a Source Data file.
