Synthesis of linear 4S via selective oxidative ring-opening of 2S by AgOTf, along with its molecular structure (displacement ellipsoids at 50% probability level; hydrogen atoms and ellipsoids of the cyclohexyl groups omitted for clarity). For E = Se, Te, experiments targeting similar ring-opening events were either unselective or failed at all.
