Left: In Wt C. albicans cells, transcription of native ECE1 is followed by translation and folding of Ece1 in the ER, transport to the Golgi apparatus and sequential processing by Kex2 and Kex1 proteases, enabling candidalysin and NCEP secretion. Right: In NCEP mutants, the modified Ece1 structure promotes misfolding which triggers ER stress.
