Optical processes of absorption and scattering in the atmosphere and the water determine the amount and spectral nature of light received by a sensor. Remote sensing reflectance, the central radiometric quantity of the GLORIA dataset, is the ratio of the water-leaving radiance just above the water surface (L_w) over above-water downwelling irradiance (E_s).
