From: On the interchangeability of sea-surface and near-surface air temperature anomalies in climatologies

Map of the difference in the linear trend between SST and nMAT in the monthly deseasoned TAO data for selected 3-year periods between 1991 and 2017. For each 3-year period, only buoys having at least 85% of data coverage are considered. Data for a given month and buoy is considered if both nMAT and SST estimate is available. Positive values indicate that SST trends are more positive than the corresponding nMAT trends, and vice versa. The original TAO data are acquired at a daily, hourly and 10-minute frequency.
