Effect of study characteristics on locomotor recovery. Differential effects of SCI modelling on neurological recovery were assessed by including only studies restricted to rats applying the BBB-score (40 experiments containing 890 rats) to increase the level of homogeneity (stratified meta-analysis). The blue shaded area within the forest plot represents the 95% CI limits of the global estimate of efficacy: 18.7% (95% CI 14.4–23.0). The horizontal error bars represent the 95% CIs for the individual estimates. Each stratification accounts for a significant proportion of between-study heterogeneity (ES: effect size, CI: confidence interval).
