Current diagnostic approaches lack sensitivity for the early-stage tau changes that precede neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer’s disease. Islam, Hill, Abrahamson and colleagues identify phospho-tau Ser262 and Ser356 as potential biomarkers for early-stage tau aggregation in Alzheimer’s disease. These findings could revolutionize the early diagnosis of and therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease, which offers hope for more effective interventions.
