Was your friend laid off yet? If yes, it may be difficult for her to get the job back. But it does not hurt you anything to talk to the employer (You do not have other choices, anyway). You had better get a letter from the doctor to address that your relative's illness proabably will be able to work in a short period of time  ater the treatment and the doctor can adjust the medicaine dose to reduce the side effect, etc.
