Ha, a diary! Have you ever written one of those?
I had a few when young, don't know where they went other than vague and faded memory of the cover colours ...
But I remember my son's diary very well: I bought the yellow notebook and asked him to write each day when he was in elementary school.
I knew of course that a diary is very personal and private, but was too curious not to have an occasional peek.
The first few times I looked, the records were the same boring each day: "I ate cereal with milk at breakfast and went to school on school bus, ... ..." 
Until one day, he wrote: "I hate writing diary, but my Mom forces me to ... ..." 
I knew right then that I failed and didn't bother to ask or read his diary anymore. 
But I'm sure the past memories, be it beautiful or painful, are carried in our hearts even if not on paper.
