Orbits of the Arase (purple) and MMS (Red) spacecraft from 8:00 on Sept 7, 2017 to 8:00 on Sept 8, 2017. a X-Y GSM projection and b X-Z GSM projection. The magnetic field lines that intersect the spacecraft (red and blue dots) at one ___location are shown with the rainbow-shaded lines. From 08:00–20:00 on Sept 7, MMS is moving inbound in the central plasma sheet from about X = −14 RE to X = −6 RE, while Arase orbits in the inner magnetosphere, inside 6 RE. From 1:00–8:00 UT on Sept 8, MMS moves duskward, towards the boundary layer and magnetosheath.
