a–d Profiles of potential temperature (\(\theta\)) from 20 individual dropsondes collected within the radii of 150 km from the storm center of Hurricanes Earl (2010), Harvey (2017), Irma (2017), Dorian (2019), and Ida (2021). The soundings are classified into storm eye, eyewall, moat, and rainbands based on the wind speed, relative humidity, and radial distance to the storm center. Note that for Harvey, Irma, Dorian, and Ida the reconnaissance flight level is about 3 km, therefore, soundings above that are not available.
