Widespread increase in dynamic imbalance in the Getz region of Antarctica from 1994 to 2018

The Getz region of West Antarctica is losing ice at an increasing rate; however, the forcing mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show for the first time that since 1994, widespread speedup has occurred on the majority of glaciers in the Getz drainage basin, with some glaciers speeding up by over 44 %.

Observations beneath Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica and implications for its retreat

Thinning ice in West Antarctica is currently contributing about 10% of the observed rise in global sea level. Observations obtained from an autonomous underwater vehicle operating beneath Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica, reveal that the glacier was recently grounded on a transverse ridge in the sea floor, but now warm sea water flows through the widening gap above the ridge.

Stronger ocean circulation and increased melting under Pine Island Glacier ice shelf

The ice shelf buttressing Antarctica’s Pine Island Glacier has been melting rapidly. Observations taken between 1994 and 2009 show that meltwater production has increased by about 50% since 1994, as a result of a stronger circulation below the ice shelf.

Pine Island Glacier terminates in a rapidly melting ice shelf and ocean conditions are believed to influence its contribution to sea level rise. Seasonal variability of ocean circulation near the Dotson Ice Shelf, Antarctica

The intrusion of relatively warm water is causing the recent rapid thinning of the Dotson ice shelf, West Antarctica. Here, the authors analyzed two-years of mooring data from the Dotson ice shelf front and found that seasonal variability of the ocean circulation and ocean surface stress are the main causes of variability in heat transport.

Sea level rise from West Antarctic mass loss significantly modified by large snowfall anomalies

The authors combine measurements of ice loss from West Antarctica with climate modelling to show that periods of drought or extremely heavy precipitation can significantly increase or decrease rates of mass loss for periods lasting several years.
