Interferons and viruses induce a novel truncated ACE2 isoform and not the full-length SARS-CoV-2 receptor

dACE2 is a newly identified isoform of ACE2 that is unable to bind the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Truncated dACE2, but not full-length ACE2, is induced by interferons and viruses, thus suggesting that such conditions are unlikely to increase cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2.

Targeting natural splicing plasticity of APOBEC3B restricts its expression and mutagenic activity

A. Rouf Banday et al. report targeting alternative splicing of APOBEC3B as a strategy to modulate APOBEC-mediated mutagenesis in cancers. Higher expression of the mutagenic APOBEC3B isoform predicted shorter progression-free survival in bladder cancer patients. Expression of this mutagenic isoform could be decreased by inducing skipping of APOBEC3B exon 5 in cells treated with SF3B1 inhibitor or splice-switching oligos.

IFNL4-ΔG is associated with prostate cancer among men at increased risk of sexually transmitted infections

Tsion Zewdu Minas et al. find that men carrying an IFNL4 variant that is more common in African Americans and is associated with impaired viral clearance have a higher risk of prostate cancer. Specifically, this risk is increased in IFNL4 variant carriers with more lifetime sexual partners, suggesting a link to impaired clearance of sexually transmitted infections
