Exciton diamagnetic shifts and valley Zeeman effects in monolayer WS₂ and MoS₂ to 65 Tesla

The spin and valley degrees of freedom are coupled in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides. Here, the authors use high magnetic fields to optically measure the valley Zeeman effect and diamagnetic exciton shift in tungsten disulphide and molybdenum disulphide, and determine the exciton binding energies.

A ternary AppA–PpsR–DNA complex mediates light regulation of photosynthesis-related gene expression

The repressor–antirepressor complex AppA–PpsR is a transcriptional regulator that permits Rhodobacter to switch between photosynthesis and respiration in response to light and oxygen. A combination of crystallography, hydrogen/deuterium-exchange MS and binding assays shows how illumination reduces the affinity of the complex for DNA and provides insight into the mechanism of signal transduction by photoreceptors.

Site-specific activation of the proton pump inhibitor rabeprazole by tetrathiolate zinc centres

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are prodrugs that are activated by protonation in the highly acidic environment of the stomach lining. Now, coordination of PPIs to protein-bound zinc ions is revealed as another pathway to PPI activation. Acting as a Lewis acid, the zinc ion facilitates conjugation of the drug to zinc-coordinating cysteine residues.

Extending the coherence of spin defects in hBN enables advanced qubit control and quantum sensing

Negatively-charged boron vacancy centers in hBN have short coherence times, hindering their potential as quantum sensors. By employing dynamical decoupling, the authors achieve an ensemble coherence time approaching the fundamental relaxation limit, enabling sensitive detection of MHz range electromagnetic fields.

Independent control of gamma and theta activity by distinct interneuron networks in the olfactory bulb

The authors recorded spontaneous and odor-evoked activity in the olfactory bulb of anesthetized and awake mice and found that distinct populations of interneurons independently orchestrated theta and gamma activity in this system. In particular, they found that silencing granule cells did not affect slow, odor-evoked inhibition.
