HIF-2α-dependent induction of miR-29a restrains T_H1 activity during T cell dependent colitis

Inflammatory intestinal lesions are often hypoxic, which results in the stabilization and activation of hypoxia-inducible-factors (HIF). Here authors show that in a mouse model of colitis, HIF-2α is specifically stabilized in CD4+ type 1T helper (T_H1) cells, leading to the upregulation of miR-29a expression and suppression of T_H1 cell function, which pathway is potentially targetable for therapeutic purposes.

Non-structural carbohydrates mediate seasonal water stress across Amazon forests

The role of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in mediating the impacts of drought in tropical trees is unclear. Here, the authors analyse leaf and branch NSC in 82 Amazon tree species across a Basin-wide precipitation gradient, finding that allocation of leaf NSC to soluble sugars is higher in drier sites and is coupled to tree hydraulic status.

Giant boid snake from the Palaeocene neotropics reveals hotter past equatorial temperatures

The discovery of the world's largest snake has important implications for our understanding of the evolution of global climate. The snake, a relative of the boa constrictor, was 13 metres long and would have weighed more than a tonne. It lived in tropical South America around 60 million years ago. A snake this size would have required mean annual temperatures between 30–34 °C, higher than the tropics today.

Functional composition of the Amazonian tree flora and forests

Using 13 functional traits we characterize the Amazonian trees and the communities they form. Amazonian tree communities are distributed along a fast-slow-spectrum. This results in clear differences in traits among these forests, as well as their biomass and biomass productivity.

Eutrophication has been shown to weaken diversity-stability relationships in grasslands, but it is unclear whether the effect depends on scale. Analysing a globally distributed network of grassland sites, the authors show a positive role of beta diversity and spatial asynchrony as drivers of stability but find that nitrogen enrichment weakens the diversity-stability relationships at different spatial scales.
