  • Catalytic iron is associated with intensive care unit mortality and is known to cause free radical-mediated cellular toxicity. Here the authors show that a soluble ferrostatin-analogue (a ferroptosis inhibitor) protects mice from injury and death in experimental iron overload induced and genetic models of organ dysfunction, but not sepsis-induced multiorgan dysfunction.

  • Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease are increasingly recognized as interconnected entities and the term acute kidney disease (AKD) has been proposed to define ongoing pathophysiologic processes following an episode of AKI. In this Consensus statement, the Acute Disease Quality Initiative 16 Workgroup propose definitions and staging criteria for AKD, and strategies for the management of affected patients. They also make recommendations for areas of future research with the aims of improving understanding of the underlying processes and improving outcomes.

  • Critical care mostly implies life-threatening situations involving systemic infection, inflammation and necrosis. Biofluids are an easily accessible source of liquid biopsies that can be used to monitor the evolution of the patient’s critical illness. The cellular and molecular profiling of necrosis and inflammation in biofluids using cutting-edge technologies such as realtime immunodiagnostics, next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry will pave the way for precision medicine v2.0 in critical care. This is needed for data mining approaches to allow patientclustering, identify novel biomarkers and develop novel intervention strategies controlling necrosis and inflammation. The real-time monitoring of biomarkers will allow continued (re)evaluation of treatment strategies using machine learning models.
