Position dependent diffusion coefficients are often estimated indirectly through mean square displacement. The authors propose a diffusion model merging position-dependent coefficients and comb-like trapping mechanisms, revealing that particle trapping mitigates the impact of media heterogeneity and that thus caution is needed in experimental interpretations.
