Due to the underlying structural disorder, identifying the defects responsible for plasticity and mechanical failure in three-dimensional disordered solids remains a long-standing challenge. In this work, the authors combine topological and geometrical analysis to identify and characterize topological defects in 3D glasses, revealing key differences from analogous results in idealized two-dimensional systems.
