Evolutionary origin of genomic structural variations in domestic yaks

Yaks have been subject to natural selection, human domestication and interspecific introgression during their evolution. Here, the authors have identified genomic structural variations and the linked genes involved in these processes in domestic yaks, to reveal new insight into genetic basis of phenotypic diversity.

Indicine cattle make up half of all cattle populations worldwide. Using a large genomic dataset, this study finds historic migrations and extensive introgression with domestic and wild bovine species has facilitated this species physiological adaptation to extreme environments.

Yak whole-genome resequencing reveals domestication signatures and prehistoric population expansions

Based on whole genome resequencing of more than 80 wild and domestic yaks from high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, this study recovers demographic and genetic processes underlying the domestication of this animal. Qiu et al.also identify genes and associated pathways as candidates for selection during the domestication process.

Incomplete lineage sorting rather than hybridization explains the inconsistent phylogeny of the wisent

Kun Wang et al. present a genomic analysis identifying incomplete lineage sorting and hybridization in the mitochondrial DNA of the European bison (wisent). They find that incomplete lineage sorting is the most feasible explanation for the phylogenetic heterogeneity observed in Bovidae.

Archaeogenetic analysis of Neolithic sheep from Anatolia suggests a complex demographic history since domestication

Yurtman, Özer, Yüncü et al. provide an ancient DNA data set to demonstrate the impact of human activity on the demographic history of domestic sheep. The authors demonstrate that there may have been multiple domestication events with notable changes to the gene pool of European and Anatolian sheep since the Neolithic.

Whole-genome sequence analysis unveils different origins of European and Asiatic mouflon and domestication-related genes in sheep

Chen, Xu, et al. performed a population genetics analysis of the eight species in the Ovis genus to assess the evolutionary and demographic history of these wild species and its domesticated counterpart. The authors identified a number of introgression events at different time periods, likely associated with the domestication process as well as identify a number of possible genomic targets of domestication.
