Updated lunar cratering chronology model with the radiometric age of Chang’e-5 samples

The lunar samples brought back by the Chinese Chang’e-5 mission have an age of 2.030 ± 0.004 billion years, providing valuable new constraints on the cratering chronology used to date most Solar System surfaces. Here an updated chronology model is presented and compared with other models currently in use.

Buried palaeo-polygonal terrain detected underneath Utopia Planitia on Mars by the Zhurong radar

The Zhurong rover identified polygonal terrain at a depth of 35 m under Utopia Planitia on Mars. This finding suggests that the mid-latitudinal region experienced a cold and wet environment near the freezing point of water around the Hesperian–Amazonian transition, possibly induced by Mars’s high obliquity.

First look by the Yutu-2 rover at the deep subsurface structure at the lunar farside

The authors here report results from the ground-penetrating radar onboard the Yutu-2 rover from the Chagn’E 4 mission. The study presents up to 330 m deep subsurface structure of the Von Karman Crater inside the South Pole Aitken Basin.

Lunar regolith and substructure at Chang’E-4 landing site in South Pole–Aitken basin

Three different layers can be distinguished in the first 500 metres of depth beneath the South Pole–Aitken basin on the Moon: a first layer made up by regolith and ejecta material from different craters, followed by a middle unit of mare basalts and finally a >200-m-thick layer of ejecta from the Leibnitz crater.
