Microenvironment-triggered multimodal precision diagnostics

Multimodal nanosensors have been developed to target and respond to hallmarks in the tumour microenvironment and provide both a non-invasive urinary monitoring tool and an on-demand positron emission tomography imaging agent to localize tumour metastasis and assess response to therapy.

Oscillation-induced yield loss in China partially driven by migratory pests from mainland Southeast Asia

Climate oscillations, such as El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), play a key role in global and regional crop yield variations. The authors analysed crop yield data in China from 1980 to 2017 and found that ENSO affects yield not only through local climate variability but also by driving migratory crop pest outbreaks, highlighting an overlooked pathway by which ENSO drives yield loss.

Zinc cyclic di-AMP nanoparticles target and suppress tumours via endothelial STING activation and tumour-associated macrophage reinvigoration

Activation of the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) can induce immunity in various cancer therapies, but delivery of STING agonists to tumours is challenging. Now a metal-based polymeric nanoparticle delivers STING agonists to tumours upon disruption of endothelial cells in tumour vasculature and targets tumour-associated macrophages, eliciting anti-tumour immune response in hard-to-treat cancer models.

Inhibited immune response and low levels of delivery inhibit starvation cancer therapies. Existing thermal technologies are mainly designed to harvest heat at high temperature, whilst low-grade heat is hardly utilized to date.
