Tip-enhanced photovoltaic effects in bismuth ferrite

Bismuth ferrite has photoelectric properties that make it an attractive alternative for use in photovoltaic devices. Here, using photoelectric atomic force microscopy, the authors show that photogenerated carriers can be collected by the tip and suggest that this can be used in photoelectric applications.

Polarization curling and flux closures in multiferroic tunnel junctions

Ferroelectric vortex-type structures have only been seen in isolated films, leaving electrode effects unexplored. Here, Peters et al. show that the polarisation curling and formation of vortex and flux-closure structures is a generic effect appearing in ultrathin ferroelectric films.

Role of ___domain walls in the abnormal photovoltaic effect in BiFeO₃

The origin of the abnormal photovoltaic effect in bismuth ferrite thin films, which causes voltages larger than the band gap, is poorly understood. Bhatnagar et al.show that this effect can be attributed to a bulk photovoltaic effect and that it can be enhanced by controlling ___domain wall conductivity.

Auxetic piezoelectric effect in heterostructures

Piezoelectrics have longitudinal and transverse piezoelectric coefficients that are opposite in sign. Here, by tuning the interface inversion asymmetry in heterostructures, auxetic systems with positive longitudinal and transverse coefficients are realized, with expansion or contraction along all directions in an electric field.

Analysing the structure of a PbTiO₃ epitaxial layer sandwiched between SrRuO₃ electrodes led to observation of a topology with two periodic modulations that form an incommensurate polar crystal, providing an analogue to incommensurate spin crystals.

Ferroelectric oxides have emerged as candidate materials for non-volatile data-storage applications, but they can be difficult to process. Researchers have now used a high-temperature deposition process to fabricate arrays of metal–ferroelectric–metal nanocapacitors with a density of 176 gigabits per square inch.

In semiconductors strain gradients can separate light induced electron-hole pairs via the flexo-photovoltaic effect. Hall-Bulk photovoltaic effect in BiFeO₃/SrTiO₃ at low temperatures

The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is not bound to the fundamental limitations of conventional electronic charge transport in photovoltaic materials. By investigating the response of the BPVE to a magnetic field in an oxide perovskite system (BiFeO₃/SrTiO₃) they show that the BPVE exhibits Hall effect behaviour and is ballistic in nature at low temperatures.

Non-conventional mechanism of ferroelectric fatigue via cation migration

Ferroelectric fatigue degrades ferroelectric properties upon polarization cycling, but its underlying chemistry is poorly understood. Here, the authors show by multimodal chemical imaging that fatigue in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 thin films is associated with Cu + ions migration from the electrode into the film structure.
