Saeedi Saravi and colleagues demonstrate an age-related increase in the gut microbial metabolite phenylacetic acid (PAA) in humans and mice, linked to Clostridium bacteria. In mice, they find that PAA triggers endothelial senescence, linking the microbiome to vascular aging.

Nicole Soranzo and colleagues report a meta-analysis of genome-wide association datasets identifying 22 associations to 8 clinically relevant hematological traits. They also identify a long-range haplotype at 12q24 that includes variants associated with platelet counts as well as coronary artery disease and shows evidence of a selective sweep in Europeans.

Melanocytic nevus count is associated with melanoma risk. In this study, a meta-analysis of 11 nevus GWAS studies identifies novel SNPs in KITLG and 9q32, and bivariate analysis with melanoma GWAS meta-analysis reveals that most nevus genes affect melanoma risk, while melanoma risk loci do not alter the nevus count.

Using proteomic and bioinformatic approaches, they analyze clusters of protein abundance profiles from detergent resistant membranes (DRMs) of erythrocytes and identify a host protein, ART4, important for P. falciparum invasion into RBCs.
