Dynamic kinetochore size regulation promotes microtubule capture and chromosome biorientation in mitosis

Sacristan et al. show that the dynein adaptor Spindly facilitates oligomerisation of the RZZ complex to expand the kinetochore, after which Spindly-associated dynein compacts the kinetochore to allow for faithful chromosome segregation.

Erythropoietin regulates energy metabolism through EPO-EpoR-RUNX1 axis

Erythropoietin (EPO) regulates energy metabolism via its receptor (EpoR) in adipose tissue. The authors demonstrate that EPO influences glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and fat mass and that EPO treatment reduces lipogenic gene expression through the EPO-EpoR-RUNX1 axis.

Interleukin-6 enhances insulin secretion by increasing glucagon-like peptide-1 secretion from L cells and alpha cells

Helga Ellingsgaard et al. show that secretion of interleukin-6 by muscle in response to exercise, or injection of recombinant protein, increases the expression of the incretin GLP-1 by both intestinal cells and by pancreatic alpha cells, thus potentiating insulin release and improving glycemic control. These results identify a new endocrine loop linking energy demands to homeostatic control while also suggesting further targets for type 2 diabetes therapy.

In oocytes of most species atypical spindles assembled in the absence of centrosomes drive chromosome segregation, however the forces driving this process are unclear. Here the authors found that spindle poles are largely dispensable and that inter-chromosomal microtubules of the central spindle control chromosomal segregation.

Erythropoietin promotes hippocampal mitochondrial function and enhances cognition in mice

Robert Jacobs, Mostafa Aboouf, et al. examined the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) in hippocampal mitochondrial function and memory in two mouse models: one overexpressing EPO in the brain, and juvenile mice treated during three days with a high dose of intraperitoneal EPO. Their results suggest that erythropoietin in the neonatal brain may impact spatial memory by increasing mitochondrial content.

Kinetochores are large proteinaceous structures that link centromeric DNA to spindle microtubules. More than 80 kinetochore proteins have been identified so far, and recent analyses are revealing how these proteins function to direct kinetochore specification and assembly, bind to microtubules and regulate chromosome segregation.
