A designer synthetic chromosome fragment functions in moss

Genome synthesis is moving into the multicellular era. This study redesigned and replaced a 155 kb chromosomal region with synthetic sequence in the model moss Physcomitrium patens. The simplified sequence obtains the correct epigenetic landscape.

An ancestral NB-LRR with duplicated 3′UTRs confers stripe rust resistance in wheat and barley

Stripe rust is a serious threat to wheat production. Here, the authors reveal that the resistance gene, only present in the wheat progenitor Aegilops tauschii and its derived synthetic wheat, encodes a nucleotide oligomerization ___domain-like receptor and confers resistance in common wheat and barley.
