Asparagine requirement in Plasmodium berghei as a target to prevent malaria transmission and liver infections

Malaria parasites obtain amino acids primarily from the host, but possess a gene encoding a putative asparagine synthetase. In vivo partial reprogramming alters age-associated molecular changes during physiological aging in mice

In vivo partial reprogramming by expression of Oct4, Sox2, Klf4 and c-Myc has been shown to have rejuvenating effects in a mouse model of premature aging. Here, the authors report that longer-term partial reprogramming regimens are safe and effective in delaying age-related changes in physiologically aged mice.

The genome sequence of African rice (Oryza glaberrima) and evidence for independent domestication

Mingsheng Chen, Klaus Mayer, Steve Rounsley, Rod Wing and colleagues report the genome sequence of African rice (Oryza glaberrima), a different species than Asian rice. The authors resequenced 20 O. glaberrima accessions and 94 Oryza barthii accessions (the putative progenitor species of O. glaberrima), and their analyses support the hypothesis that O. glaberrima was domesticated in a single region along the upper Niger river.

The route of vaccine administration is known to effect the induction of immune response and the quality of such immunity. Short term systemic expression of the reprogramming factors Oct-3/4, Sox2, Klf4, c-Myc (OSKM) rejuvenates aging cells and promotes tissue regeneration. DNA transposons are numerous in plant genomes. Establishment of human iPSC-based models for the study and targeting of glioma initiating cells

Glioma can originate from the transformation of neural progenitor cells into glioma initiating cells. Here, the authors demonstrate the use of induced pluripotent stem cells as a suitable model for generating neural progenitor cells, which can be subsequently transformed to glioma initiating cells that are able to the generate human glioma-like tumours in mice.

A common MYBPC3 (cardiac myosin binding protein C) variant associated with cardiomyopathies in South Asia

Kumarasamy Thangaraj and colleagues describe the association of a 25-bp deletion in MYBPC3 with heritable cardiomyopathies in Indian populations. They find a high prevalence (4–8%) of the deletion in surveyed Indian populations and an absence of the deletion in surveyed populations outside of Southeast Asia.

Bioinspired carrier-free peptide conjugated BF₂-oxasmaragdyrin dye-based nano self-assemblies: a photostable NIR cancer theragnostic agent

We report the synthesis of L,L-diphenylalanine conjugated BF₂-oxasmaragdyrin (FF-BSC), and fabrication of monodispersed spherical self-assemblies (FF-BSC NP), using USP class 3 solvent-water mixture. FF-BSC NPs exhibited excellent photo-stability (NIR exposure), photothermal efficacy and NIR fluorescence. Further, the formulation was lyophilized to enhance the storage. In vivo studies of these nanoparticles, demonstrated nontoxicity, efficient whole-body NIRF imaging, fractional passive tumour homing, and excellent photothermal tumor ablation efficacy.
