Integrative analysis of reference epigenomes in 20 rice varieties

Comprehensive epigenomic maps of various rice varieties are still unavailable. Here, the authors report the development of eChIP as a fast and low-input upgrade of regular plant ChIP-seq protocol for epigenome analysis of 20 rice varieties and annotate over 80% of the genome with different epigenome properties for transcriptional regulation.

Noninvasive in vivo photoacoustic detection of malaria with Cytophone in Cameroon

Improved diagnostics for malaria are desired. Here the authors present first-in-human data for a non-invasive device based on detection of hemozoin in malaria-infected red blood cells, and show that it is safe with comparable performance to current point-of-care diagnostics without the need for a blood sample.

NORFA, long intergenic noncoding RNA, maintains sow fertility by inhibiting granulosa cell death

Xing Du et al. show that long intergenic non-coding RNA (lincRNA) NORFA maintains sow fertility by inhibiting apoptotic death of granulosa cells through the TGF-β signaling pathway. A breed-specific 19-bp duplication suggests that transcription factor NFIX may enhance the transcription of NORFA, providing insights into the role of lincRNAs for female fertility.
