Coherent control of rare earth 4f shell wavefunctions in the quantum spin liquid Tb₂Ti₂O₇

Recent years have seen significant progress in the coherent control of collective excitations such as magnons and phonons in quantum materials using ultrafast laser pulses. Here the authors report evidence of coherent excitation of orbitals in a rare earth pyrochlore spin liquid material Tb2Ti2O7 by THz pulses.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of spin-lattice coupling

Experimental approaches that can directly measure spin-lattice coupling are rare. Here, authors report direct observation of the coupling of the phonon and magnon dynamics of a coherently driven electromagnon in a multiferroic hexaferrite using time-resolved X-ray diffraction. Nonlinear lattice dynamics as a basis for enhanced superconductivity in YBa₂Cu₃O_6.5

Femtosecond X-ray diffraction and ab initio density functional theory calculations are used to determine the crystal structure of YBa₂Cu₃O_6.5 undergoing optically driven, nonlinear lattice excitation above the transition temperature of 52 kelvin, under which conditions the electronic structure of the material changes in such a way as to favour superconductivity.

Hard X-ray transient grating spectroscopy on bismuth germanate

A four-wave mixing technique is developed in the hard X-ray range. A diamond phase grating in an X-ray beam path creates a periodic excitation pattern on a sample via the Talbot effect. The response of the periodic excitation is probed by an optical pulse.

Probing dynamics in quantum materials with femtosecond X-rays

In quantum materials, ultrashort light pulses can induce transitions between electronic phases, switch ferroic orders and unveil non-equilibrium emergent behaviours. Here, we review the use of femtosecond X-ray pulses in tracking the underlying dynamics of the structural, electronic and magnetic order in these systems.
