Large-scale sequencing of flatfish genomes provides insights into the polyphyletic origin of their specialized body plan

Analysis of 11 flatfish genomes indicates that Pleuronectoidei and Psettodoidei are not a monophyletic group. Genomic and transcriptomic data suggest that the WNT and RA pathways played a role in the evolution of the specialized body of flatfish.

Yang et al. investigate the genetic basis of pheromone-elicited fright behavior in ostariophysan fish. They identify a subfamily of vomeronasal type 2 receptor-like (OlfC) that appears to be under strong positive selection; its transcriptional variation suggests a role in the fright behavior of ostariophysan fish.
