Observation of dichotomic field-tunable electronic structure in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene

The phase diagram of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene depends on the electric field direction, exhibiting phases similar to twisted bilayer and double-bilayer graphene. Here the authors study the field dependent electronic structure, in particular flat bands, using nano-ARPES and explain the field-tunability.

Lorentz-violating type-II Dirac fermions in transition metal dichalcogenide PtTe₂

Whether the spin-degenerate counterpart of Lorentz-violating Weyl fermions, the Dirac fermions, can be realized remains as an open question. Here, Yan et al. report experimental evidence of such type-II Dirac fermions in bulk PtTe₂ single crystal with a pair of strongly tilted Dirac cones.

Stereodivergent photobiocatalytic radical cyclization through the repurposing and directed evolution of fatty acid photodecarboxylases

Despite their intriguing photochemical activities, natural photoenzymes have not yet been repurposed for new-to-nature activities. Now, by leveraging the strongly oxidizing excited-state flavoquinone cofactor, fatty acid photodecarboxylases were engineered to catalyse unnatural decarboxylative radical cyclization with excellent chemo-, enantio- and diastereoselectivities.

A biocatalytic platform for asymmetric alkylation of α-keto acids by mining and engineering of methyltransferases

Catalytic asymmetric a-alkylation of carbonyl compounds represents a longstanding challenge in synthetic organic chemistry but general methods for the catalytic symmetric alkylation of carbonyl compounds remain elusive. Here, the authors mine and engineer methyltransferases as synthetically useful biocatalysts for the catalytic asymmetric alkylation reactions of carbonyl compounds.

Enhanced low-temperature proton conductivity in hydrogen-intercalated brownmillerite oxide

Solid oxide ionic conductors typically require elevated temperature to activate ionic transport. Here the authors report unusually high proton conductivity close to room temperature in a hydrogenated oxide, HSrCoO_2.5, which they attribute to the intrinsically ordered oxygen vacancy channels and high proton concentration.

Iron-dependent histone 3 lysine 9 demethylation controls B cell proliferation and humoral immune responses

The authors show an important role for iron in B cell proliferation via histone 3 lysine 9 (H3K9) demethylation at the cyclin E1 promoter. Using a measles vaccination murine model, they show that iron-deficient individuals have a significantly reduced antibody response to the vaccine when compared to iron-normal controls.

ATF-3 expression inhibits melanoma growth by downregulating ERK and AKT pathways

This study demonstrates that ATF-3 plays a suppressive function in melanoma tumor progression via a significant decrease in expression in metastatic melanoma and correlation with tumor virulence. ATF-3 overexpression significantly inhibits cell growth, migration, and invasion in vitro, and abrogates tumor growth in a human melanoma xenograft mouse model in vivo.
