Li Guo et al. assemble the genome of Nannochloropsis oceanica, finding evidence that during the secondary endosymbiosis event responsible for its speciation, its host nucleus was overthrown by a symbiont nucleus. They suggest that the symbiont nucleus became dominant over the host nucleus.
