A high-stringency blueprint of the human proteome

The Human Proteome Project (HPP) was launched in 2010 to enhance accurate annotation of the genome-encoded proteome. Ten years later, the HPP releases its first blueprint of the human proteome, annotating 90% of all known proteins at high-stringency and discussing the implications of proteomics for precision medicine.

The implementation of screening tests for certain cancers has led to the phenomenon of overdiagnosis, whereby a cancer is diagnosed that would otherwise not go on to cause symptoms or death. Tsai, Zhang, Scholten et al. develop a surfactant- assisted one-pot sample preparation coupled with mass spectrometry method (SOP-MS) for label-free global single-cell proteomics. This method allows researchers to measure hundreds of proteins from single human cells, suggesting its utility for quantitative single-cell proteomics.
