Ku limits RNA-induced innate immunity to allow Alu expansion in primates

Studies on the essentiality of Ku in human cells reveal that Ku interacts with diverse double-stranded RNA molecules, including antisense Alu, and enables tolerance of Alu sequence expansion in primates.

A glycan gate controls opening of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

The opening mechanism of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein has been studied by integrating computational and experimental data. Combining weighted ensemble molecular dynamics simulations, biolayer interferometry and ManifoldEM analysis of cryo-EM data revealed that the glycan at N343 plays a gating role in the opening mechanism of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

Structure-based prediction and characterization of photo-crosslinking in native protein–RNA complexes

Feng et al. developed a computational method PxR3D-map to jointly analyze crosslinked nucleotides and amino acids in protein-RNA complexes, which revealed key structural features underlying photocrosslinking of protein and RNA in cells.

An immune response characterizes early Alzheimer’s disease pathology and subjective cognitive impairment in hydrocephalus biopsies

Specific transcriptional changes in microglia associated with Alzheimer’s disease have been reported. Here, the authors show that transcriptional analysis of human hydrocephalus biopsies identifies changes in immune response genes associated with early AD pathology, including cognitive decline.
