Experiments demonstrate the formation of a series of oxidized C₄- and C₅-products from the OH + isoprene reaction including highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs). These HOMs could be important for the generation of secondary organic aerosols.

Hydroxyl radical-induced formation of highly oxidized organic compounds

Secondary organic aerosols are important contributors to the Earth’s radiation budget, however questions remain about their formation from highly-oxidized precursors. Here the authors show that the daytime reaction of hydroxyl radicals with α- and β-pinene is a greater source of highly-oxidized products than previously assumed.

Direct sulfuric acid formation from the gas-phase oxidation of reduced-sulfur compounds

Experiments verify that oxidation of organic sulphur compounds, such as DMS, directly yields gas-phase H₂SO₄. Simulations reveal that this pathway can be competitive with SO₂ oxidation over oceans in the Southern Hemisphere.

Efficient alkane oxidation under combustion engine and atmospheric conditions

Efficient autoxidation of organic compounds typically requires that they possess double bonds or oxygen-containing moieties, which is why alkanes were thought to contribute little to atmospheric organic aerosol formation. Here, mass spectrometry shows significant autoxidation of alkanes under both atmospheric and combustion conditions.
