A possible macronova in the late afterglow of the long–short burst GRB 060614

The gamma-ray burst GRB 060614 was an unusual astrophysical event whose origins are still unclear. This study re-examines the burst’s afterglow data and finds an excess in the spectrum that appears to be consistent with a weak macronova, suggesting that GRB 060614 originated from a compact binary merger.

Probable evidence for a transient mega-electron volt emission line in the GRB 221023A

The detection of X-ray or gamma-ray spectral lines in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is rare. Here, the authors report a probable evidence of a narrow emission feature at about 2.1 mega-electron volts (MeV) in the spectrum of GRB 221023A, which represents the second event following GRB 221009A with a narrow emission feature in the MeV energy range.

The Macronova in GRB 050709 and the GRB-macronova connection

A macronova is a clear signature that a short gamma-ray burst has been emitted by a compact-binary merger, but evidence of these events is so far scarce. Here, the authors report signs of a macronova in the optical afterglow of GRB050709, and find similar evidence in other three short bursts.

The genome sequences of 175 Ebola virus from five districts in Sierra Leone, collected during September–November 2014, show that the rate of virus evolution seems to be similar to that observed during previous outbreaks and that the genetic diversity of the virus has increased substantially, with the emergence of several novel lineages.

A kilonova associated with GRB 070809

GRB 070809 shows an unusual optical radiation component at t ≈ 0.47 d, at odds with a forward shock afterglow. If interpreted as a kilonova, the possibility arises of using short gamma-ray bursts to identify neutron star mergers beyond LIGO’s reach.
