  • The authors report the realization of a composite vortex N2+ air laser with controllable OAM by using a Gaussian-shaped pump and an external vortex seed. Numerical simulations reveal that the interference between self-seeded Gaussian-shaped and externally-seeded vortex lasing emissions plays a key role in the topological charge transformation of the composite vortex N2+ air laser.

  • Osteoarthritis has been believed to be caused by improper mechanical function of articular joints. Xu Cao and his colleagues now show that this mechanical process leads to upregulation of transforming growth factor β1 activity in mesenchymal stem cells of subchondral bone, resulting in aberrant bone formation, further destabilization of the joint and ultimately the onset of the disease.

  • Here, a draft sequence of the giant panda genome is assembled using next-generation sequencing technology alone. Genome analysis reveals a low divergence rate in comparison with dog and human genomes and insights into panda-specific traits; for example, the giant panda's bamboo diet may be more dependent on its gut microbiome than its own genetic composition.
