Magnetoelectric effects and valley-controlled spin quantum gates in transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers

Exploiting as many degrees of freedom of the electron as possible will make future electronic devices more versatile. Here, the authors show that coupling of spin, layer pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers makes them a promising platform for this purpose.

Biosynthesis of GMGT lipids by a radical SAM enzyme associated with anaerobic archaea and oxygen-deficient environments

The biosynthesis of membrane-spanning lipids in archaea is poorly understood. Here, Li et al. identify an archaeal enzyme that forms a C(sp³)–C(sp³) linkage between isoprenoid chains for the synthesis of membrane-spanning GMGT lipids, and show that the corresponding gene is exclusively found in obligate anaerobic archaea and in metagenomes from oxygen-deficient environments.

Maltodextrin-based imaging probes detect bacteria in vivo with high sensitivity and specificity

The in vivo optical detection of bacterial infections requires highly specific imaging probes with small affinity to mammalian tissue. It is now shown that fluorescent dyes that are conjugated to maltohexaose can be internalized rapidly via the bacteria-specific maltodextrin transport pathway, enabling the in vivo imaging of Escherichia coli down to 10⁵ colony-forming units.

Proteoglycans are glycosylated proteins that play a number of structural and signalling functions. Here, Corti, Wang et al. show that the N-terminal sequence of proteoglycan Syndecan-2 selectively increases 6-O sulfation of its heparan sulfate chains, and that this promotes formation of a ternary Sdc2/VEGFA/VEGFR2 complex leading to increased angiogenesis.
