Indan and tetralin are used as fuel additives and intermediates in the manufacture of many products, including thermal-stable jet fuel. Here the authors report a route for the synthesis of methylindan and tetralin by the hydrogenolysis of xylose or hemicellulose over a non-noble metal catalyst, followed by further reaction over zeolite H-ZSM-5.
