Steatotic liver disease (SLD) encompasses a spectrum of hepatic lipid-accumulation disorders, including metabolic and alcohol-related liver disease. This Perspective introduces the ‘SLD burden paradox’, a concept illustrating the disparity between disease prevalence and liver-related mortality between SLD subclasses.
