The nature of the pairing symmetry in superconducting single-layer FeSe has been the subject of intense debate. Here, the authors use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to show the absence of topological edge/corner modes, providing evidence for sign-preserving s-wave pairing.

Heterojunctions of two-dimensional materials are used to design electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, the authors show that zigzag terraces between monolayers and bilayers form atomically sharp type-I heterojunctions, resulting in a wire-like interface both in WSe₂ and in MoSe₂.

Bound states in continuum have attracted attention in various platforms, and recently condensation of bound states in continuum polariton modes was demonstrated at low temperatures. Here the authors report the observation of such a state in a periodic air-hole perovskite-based photonic crystal at room temperature.

The authors use scanning tunnelling microscopy and muon spin resonance to demonstrate time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity in Cs(V, Ta)₃Sb₅. The Cooper pairing in this state exhibits magnetism and is modulated by it.

The kagome superconductor CsV₃Sb₅ exhibits a charge density wave (CDW) as well as superconductivity (SC). Here, the authors find that the CDW transition temperature decreases with decreasing sample thickness to 72 K at 27 atomic layers, but then unexpectedly increases to 120 K at 5 layers, an opposite trend to SC.

Huanming Yang, Zhiming Cai, Jun Wang and colleagues report whole-exome sequencing of 10 clear cell renal cell carcinomas followed by a screen of ~1,100 genes in a total of 98 tumors. They found 12 new disease-associated genes and detected frequent alterations in the ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway.

Predictions suggest enhanced correlation effect due to multiple van Hove singularities (VHS) in the vicinity of the Fermi level in the recently discovered AV₃Sb₅ kagome metals. Here the authors identify three VHSs close to the Fermi level with diverse sublattice characters in CsV₃Sb₅, and one of them shows flat dispersion suggesting the higher-order nature.

Rashba type spin splitting – relevant for spintronics applications - is driven by inversion symmetry breaking but could so far not be realized in all momentum directions in a crystal. Here, the authors report on PtBi₂ that exhibits Rashba spin splitting in all three momentum directions.

Zhiming Cai and colleagues report whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing of 99 paired tumor-normal samples of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. They find that 32% of tumors harbor alterations in genes involved in sister chromatid cohesion, including STAG2, ESPL1, NIPBL, SMC1A and SMC3.

Zhiming Cai and colleagues report the exome sequencing of tumor and matched normal tissue from nine transitional cell carcinomas (TCCs) of the bladder, with further screening in 88 additional subjects. The authors identify mutations in chromatin remodeling genes in 59% of the 97 TCC subjects.

In this study, the authors identify the electronic ground states of the La₃Ni₂O₇ film at ambient pressure revealing the critical role of ligand oxygen and the existence of long-range spin ordering along with charge-like anisotropy.
